It’s January and the whole world is cheering the "New Year - New Me!” slogans. Well… Probably the call for a brand “New Me” with the new year is slightly radical and unnecessary... But I'm always on board for a “Better Me”! I strongly believe in learning, growing, and piece by piece building the life I want for myself. And it’s true that the beginning of the year is a great time to start this process. You have the whole 12 months to work towards your goals and your motivation to succeed is stronger than ever.

When you sit down to write your new year’s resolutions - ask yourself how your current style fits into that new vision of a better you. Does it support your goals for 2019? Does it make you feel comfortable, confident, empowered? Does it make you happy? Does it suit your lifestyle and career ambitions? Or maybe you simply want to start this year fresh and need a new look to help you?

How you dress is a reflection of who you are and who you want to be. Your personal style deserves the consideration and plan just as much as your health and fitness goals. Whatever the reason to work on your style - this blog series will guide you through that process.

Follow these 5 steps to find your own style or refine it, and start to look and feel your best in 2019 and the years to come.

STEP 1

Who do you want to be?

A style is about identifying what you want your clothes to say about you. It takes time to create that awareness and develop your own true taste. And to do that you need to find out what you like, what don’t like and look for inspiration.

  • What kind of look do you want to achieve? How do you want to feel in your clothes? Professional, casual, elegant, relaxed, unique, understated, rebellious, cute… The options are limitless.

  • Who is your style icon? Is there a person whose style you like? Someone you would love to swap closets with? An actor, musician, model, fashion blogger, movie character, public figure, celebrity, your best friend… It can be anybody. Paying attention to what you like in other people’s outfits can give you great insight into how you would like to look.

  • What’s in your Pinterest board? First of all, if you don’t use Pinterest, I highly recommend you to do so. It’s an endless source of inspiration for all areas of your life and a handy way to keep it organized. Create a style board and add the looks you like. Take time to analyze what you saved. Are there any looks you pin on repeat? Soon enough, you will be able to see the pattern and identify your preferred styles.

  • What inspires you? Inspiration is a very personal experience and a connection with your true self. Find who/what you identify with, adopt that to your character and express it in your outfits. Inspiration can come from anything - culture, city, lifestyle, book, music, art, movie, nature, travel… Whatever makes your heart beat faster!

  • What is your lifestyle? Keep in mind that your new, refined style has to serve your lifestyle. You might love to wear distressed jeans, a slouchy oversized sweater, and sneakers. But if you work in client facing sector, such as a consulting, you won’t look very professional and your career might suffer. Find the balance between your style and the practicalities of your life. There is a way to reflect your personal style even in a strict dress-code environment.

Be patient. Developing your own style takes time and it will evolve along with your progress in life. Research, experiment and have fun when trying new things. And remember that it's okay to make mistakes! We all make them. That’s how we learn about ourselves.
